A good week became a very good one on Saturday as we came from a goal down to beat Premier Division Conley Heath. We made a number of changes to the starting line up with Dale Collins, Will Wright, Jamie Cox, Darryl Smith and captain Shaun Ennis all coming in.
We couldn’t have got off to a worse start if we tried, Dan Smith trying to see a ball back to Liam Jahn in goal but hadn’t seen the Conley Heath striker on his blind side who could walk the ball into an empty after just 2 minutes.
The rest of the half we never got going and probably should have conceded a 2nd. We also lost Tommy Cooke and Danny Simpson to hamstring injuries with less than 30 minutes on the clock. Scott Valentine and Jacob Hack coming on in their places.
We managed to stay in the game and got to half time just adrift by the early goal only. We spoke at half time about trying to dictate more of the play. We were back on level terms on 48 minutes when a Scott Valentine corner was headed in by Darryl Smith.
The goal gave us a lift and we enjoyed good possession for the first time in the game. We got our noses in front on 66 minutes with a goal worthy of winning a cup tie. The ball was worked to Scott Valentine on the edge of the area and his first time strike arrowed into the far corner.
We played the remainder of the game on the counter attack, Darryl Smith went very close with a shot from just inside Colney’s half. Colney started to ask more questions of us defensively which in the main we answered very well. They had 2 or 3 good chances to take the tie to penalties but couldn’t convert them. Toby Cribb came on for Darryl Smith on 87 minutes. We managed to see the game out and hold on for the win.
Man of the match was Shaun Ennis.
